My PCOS Journey Part 1 : What is PCOS?

As I have already mentioned on my other posts, I have some skin issues. Despite my good hygiene, I still developed an oily skin and acne. During all these years, I didn't know I had PCOS. So what exactly is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or more commonly known as PCOS is a very common problem for women of different age. Some women might not know about it but it is the culprit to different "woman" problems.

PCOS is a problem where your hormones are not properly produced or are out of balance. This can lead to different problems such as:

- Acne
- Oily Skin
- Irregular Periods
- Weight Gain
- Excessive Hair Growth on face, legs and/or arms
- Heart Diseases
- Thyroidism
- Diabetes

and more....

Why exactly happen to our body when we have PCOS?

Let me keep it short and simple.
Normal Person:
Inside the Ovary:
-Eggs are produced inside the ovary
-The ovary has follicles which builds up fluid as the egg grows
-The follicle will break open and release the matured eggs
- The eggs are fertilized inside the fallopian tubes
- Ovulation then occurs

Women with PCOS:
-Eggs are produced inside the ovary
-The ovary has follicles which builds up fluid as the egg grows
-The follicle will break open BUT DOES NOT RELEASE ANY EGGS.

Therefore no ovulation will happen and thus no progesterones are made WHICH can result to irregular periods AND creation of male hormones.

I was a first year college student when my acne started to flare up. I didn't know what to do since my skin was originally smooth, flawless and fair. My mom told me that I might just be a late-bloomer and this is just the typical teenage acne but I know something's wrong. My acne worsen from late 2012 until 2015. My face was full of pus and scars. No matter how many times I wash my face, my skin is still oily. I wanted to do something so I bought different types of products and went to different derm clinics. Everyone of them told me to buy these certain products and I should be careful of my sleeping pattern, drink lots of water and be mindful of what I eat. I have a very hearty appetite but I never gained much weight. I do sleep late but I make sure to make up for it. Nothing really helped me instead it made me susceptible to any product hoax.

A close friend of mine told me that she has PCOS and that she took BCP (Birth Control Pill) to control her acne. That's when I started to research about PCOS.

Like what I mentioned, I don't have any problems with my weight. I do dance a lot and try my best to do exercises. My only symptoms are acne, oily skin and heavy irregular periods( cramps, mood swings and depression).

Somehow, I felt that PCOS might be the cause of my acne. I forced my mom to bring me to an OB/GYN. My doctor told me to have an ultrasound and there it is.... I was diagnosed with PCOS. Although, to be honest, I still don't know the cause of my PCOS until now.

I read online that taking BCP can help me clear out my skin. I suggested it to my doctor and she told me to use it. She said the BCP has really solved a lot of skin problems and it is also a good way to control PCOS.

I'm still taking BCP ( Diane 35) for 7 months until now. So far, I am really very happy to see some good results. Maybe after 2 months, I will stop taking it and start with taking Vitex and Estroblock or Saw Palmetto. Some of you might say... "Why stop it? If you have good results?" I will tell you the reasons on my next post: Why I want to stop taking Birth Control Pills. I will also post my PCOS status next time.

Please don't hesitate when you feel something is wrong. Immediately go to the doctor and ask for help. You might save yourself some time and tears. :)
